Amira, a 24-year-old university graduate, is passionate about healthy eating and sustainability. She has noticed that many local cafés rely on single-use plastics and offer limited healthy options. As a result, she has developed a business idea: a mobile smoothie and snack van that uses biodegradable packaging and locally sourced ingredients. Amira wants to turn her idea into a successful business.
1) Identify the key features of Amira's business idea. 2) Explain two reasons why Amira should create a business plan before starting her business.
4Lesson Overview
A Business Plan
Unit 3.1 Marketing & Finance — 3.1.1: Intro to Business, Entrepreneurs & SMART Objs
Learning Objective: To explain the purpose and value of a Business Plan.
Key Vocabulary: Business Plan, Entrepreneur, Stakeholder, Enterprise
Success Criteria:
To describe a Business Plan
To explain the purpose of a Business Plan
To explain the value of a Business Plan
To create a Business Plan for a new business idea
5
What is a Business Plan?
A document that outlines how an entrepreneur is going to set up a new business and how the business will develop over a period of time, like one or two years.
6
What is a Business Plan — Two Audiences
A business plan has two key audiences, and therefore two main purposes.
For the Entrepreneur (Internal): To force the owner to think through every aspect of the business, clarifying their strategy and identifying potential problems before they start. It helps reduce risk.
For External Stakeholders (External): The main purpose is to persuade external stakeholders, especially banks and investors, to provide finance.
7
Value of a Business Plan
A bank or investor will not lend or invest money based on just an idea. They need to see a convincing plan that shows the business is viable. A good business plan demonstrates: a clear strategy, financial viability, market awareness (market research), and reduces risk.
8
Limitations of a Business Plan
Based on forecasts
Can become outdated quickly
Time-consuming and rigid

Study the Business Plan for The Daily Grind Co. What observations/comments can you make about the viability of this new business venture?
10
Knowledge Task
The TV show Dragons' Den provides real-life examples of entrepreneurs pitching to raise finance. Watch a successful pitch on Dragons' Den. What were the key pieces of information the entrepreneur provided that were likely taken from their business plan (e.g. sales figures, profit margins, market size, plan for the investment)?
Explain why a detailed financial forecast (like a cash-flow forecast) is arguably the most important part of a business plan for an investor like Peter Jones, Steven Bartlett or Deborah Meaden.
A business plan is sometimes described as a 'living document' that needs regular updating. Is a business plan more valuable as a tool for raising finance, or as a guide for the entrepreneur to make better decisions as the business grows?

Application Task: Paul's Pastries
Paul is a successful baker who has worked at Tesco for over 10 years in the bakery section. Paul believes his talent is wasted and would like to start his own business operating a pastry shop, selling sausage rolls, pork pies, cakes and other common bakery items you would find in Greggs. Paul is ambitious but is also concerned with the current economic situation in the UK and is unsure how to compete with well-established rivals Greggs. Paul would like a bank loan but is struggling to create his business plan. He has asked for your help.
13
Application Task: Paul's Pastries — Task
Advise Paul on what he should put in his business plan. Paul is confident with his projected revenue, costs & profit and cash flow. He is more concerned about: writing down the business idea; what aims and objectives to focus his business on; what target market should he focus on (and what market research to undertake); where to place his business to maximise sales; what price to charge and how to promote (marketing mix) to compete with Greggs.
14
STAR Task
For a new start-up business of your choice in the local area, create a Business Plan to present to the bank to secure an initial £20,000 start-up loan. Research online a template you can use to make it look professional and corporate. Design a logo for your new business using logo creation software.

Real-World Case Studies
BrewDog — 'Equity for Punks' as an alternative to a traditional business plan pitch
James Watt and Martin Dickie founded BrewDog in Fraserburgh, Scotland, in 2007. Rather than relying solely on a bank loan, they launched a crowdfunding scheme called "Equity for Punks" in 2009, which raised around £75 million from more than 200,000 investors over several rounds — an unconventional but highly successful way to fund a growing business plan.

BrewDog — when growth outpaces the plan (a caution on limitations)
By 2026, BrewDog's UK operations had entered administration and its brewery and some bars were sold to US company Tilray for £33 million, with hundreds of job losses and the closure of a number of pubs. Original "Equity Punk" investors — some of whom had invested thousands of pounds — faced losing their investment. This is a real, current example of the lesson's point that a business plan is "based on forecasts" and "can become outdated quickly" — no plan, however strong at the start, guarantees long-term success.

Exam-Style Practice
Define the term 'business plan'. (2 marks)
Model answer
A business plan is a document that outlines how an entrepreneur is going to set up a new business and how it will develop over time, such as one to two years.
Explain one limitation of a business plan. (4 marks)
Model answer
One limitation is that a business plan is based on forecasts, which may turn out to be inaccurate — market conditions can change quickly, meaning a plan that looked strong at launch can become outdated, as seen when established businesses later face unexpected financial pressure despite a well-regarded original plan.
Assess the value of a business plan to a new entrepreneur seeking a bank loan. (9 marks)
Model answer structure
Value: A business plan reduces the bank's risk by demonstrating financial viability, market awareness, and a clear strategy — without it, most banks won't lend at all.
Limitation: A plan is only as good as its forecasts; unexpected changes in costs, competition, or consumer demand can make it outdated quickly.
Judgement: For a new entrepreneur, a business plan is likely essential to secure initial funding at all, even though its long-term value depends on the entrepreneur continuing to revisit and update it as the business grows.

Synoptic link
Connecting to finance: A cash-flow forecast, mentioned in this lesson as arguably the most important part of a plan for an investor, links directly to the finance content in 3.1.4. Strong students should be able to explain WHY cash flow matters more to an investor than a profit forecast alone: a profitable business can still fail if it runs out of cash to pay short-term bills.
Examiner's eye
A common weak answer lists business plan sections ("it needs a marketing plan, a financial plan...") without explaining the purpose behind them. A stronger answer links each section back to reducing risk or persuading a specific stakeholder — e.g. "the marketing plan reassures the bank that the entrepreneur understands their target market, reducing the risk of low sales."
